Cardholders advised to check security of online retailers. Credit card holders should make sure they only use their cards on secure websites this festive season, The UK Cards Association has said.
Recent research from IMRG/Capgemini showed that Britons are set to spend around 15% more on online retailers this year compared to 2008.
The UK Cards Association has urged caution when using credit cards online and has launched a safety campaign on the issue.
Cardholders are advised to keep their PC up-to-date with the latest anti-virus software in order to reduce the chances of fraud.
Other recommendations listed by The UK Cards Association include looking out for the padlock sign on websites, which indicates it offers a secure payment system.
Katy Worobec, head of fraud control for the trade association, said: “More of us than ever before will be doing our Christmas shopping online this year, and there is absolutely no reason why we shouldn’t be doing so in complete confidence.”
