Which? has released credit card guidance. Online shoppers aged 50 and over have been advised by Which? to take “simple steps” to avoid credit card fraud.

The consumer group has published new guidance entitled Computing Made Easy for the Over 50s in order to help people reduce their online crime risks.

Customers are advised by Which? to switch on existing consumer protections stored on their desktop and laptop computers, including anti-spyware software and firewalls.

This move will limit web surfers’ chances of clicking on to links containing malware, through which hackers can extract personal data from computers.

Over-50s are also advised to shop on websites with addresses beginning https rather than http only and to pay for all purchases worth over £100 by credit card, in order to gain extra protections from the Consumer Credit Act.

Matt Bath, technology editor at Which?, commented: “While millions of people will shop online this Christmas without any problems, fraudsters will be taking advantage of those less savvy.

“By taking a few simple steps, you can make yourself a less tempting target for these criminals, and ensure it’s only your Christmas that you are paying for this year.”
